Plastic wrap has one job: cover what’s underneath. Designers found several more. Transparent film catches light, wrinkles into sharp highlights, pulls tight across edges, and adds just enough physical tension to make a perfectly flat layout feel handled. Our plastic wrap textures keep those optical tricks intact.
Plastic wrap textures: highlights, wrinkles, and a sealed look
Plastic wrap textures are photographs of transparent film over a surface: cellophane, shrink wrap, cling film, a CD sleeve. What they add is light, not dirt. It’s bright highlights, wrinkle lines, and slight distortion where the film is pulled tight, so the surface becomes glossy and factory-sealed.
Most of ours are transparent PNGs, so the process is short: put the file on top, set it to Screen, and mask the highlights off anything that has to be readable. They are naturally good at adding realism fast. One wrinkle of film does more for a flat mockup than an hour of shading, and the shrink-wrapped look is now common in music packaging, streetwear, and reissues.
Choosing by format
- Transparent PNG overlays: film on a transparent background. Drop it on top, set it to Screen, mask off whatever has to stay readable.
- Square wraps: sized for covers, social posts and anything that has to hold up cropped to a tile.
- Rectangular and A4 wraps: for posters, flyers and book covers, where the wrinkles need to run the long way.
- Full plastic backgrounds: raster files where the film fills the frame. A base to build on, not an overlay.
How we make plastic wrap textures
The film is stretched or crumpled over a surface, lit from the side, and shot against black. Black matters here, because plastic is transparent and has almost no color of its own. What the camera records is reflected light, and a dark background leaves the highlights as the only thing in the frame.
Next, we drop the dark tones and keep the bright ones, which turns the shot into a transparent PNG you can place straight onto artwork. Worth understanding: the wrinkles you see in the final file are highlights, not the plastic.
Two things we watch during the shoot. Highlights blown to pure white have no detail left in them and can't be brought back later, so we expose to keep them just under. And we shoot each sheet at the proportion it will be used at, because stretching a wrap to a different aspect ratio bends the wrinkles into shapes plastic doesn't make.
What to check before you download
The material is the same everywhere in this category, which puts all the difference in file preparation.
- Real transparency: check for an alpha channel. A JPG on a black background works on Screen and will fight you the moment the wrap has to sit over something light.
- Clipped highlights: pure white streaks hold no information. You can drop the opacity, and you cannot recover the shape.
- Proportion: match square to square and A4 to A4. Any scaling that isn't uniform distorts the wrinkles.
- Whether the edge of the sheet is included: a visible film edge reads as a wrapped object, and a full-frame wrap reads as a surface. Both are useful, and they don't substitute for each other.
- Resolution: film highlights are thin and hard-edged, which makes them the first thing to soften when you scale up.
Where plastic wrap textures get used
Before you get attached to a layout: the film goes on last, which means everything under it has to be finished before you place it. Heavy sans survives the highlights, and thin type does not. Chrome and gloss text effects pair well, since both are built out of reflection. Matte paper texture on the same surface does not, because you end up claiming two materials at once and nobody is fooled. After that, the only real question is whether the film is wrapping an object or lying flat across the whole surface.
- Album and single covers: the sealed look of a physical release.
- Reissue and deluxe editions: shrink wrap over a jacket, referencing how the original was sold.
- Packaging and product mockups: film over a box or bottle. Source of gloss to a flat render.
- Sticker and merch mockups: sealed packs and wrapped bundles.
- Streetwear drops and lookbooks: wrapped garments and packaging shots for a release.
- Poster presentation: a wrapped print, useful for showing a poster as a product for sale.
- Editorial and fashion layouts: film laid flat across an image for a manufactured tone.
- Type and logo treatments: highlights running flat across heavy letterforms.
Most are transparent PNGs with only the highlights and creases, so you place one over a finished layout, and it works as film on top. Screen mode suits the bright files, and a second copy on Multiply adds the shadows.
Wrap stays on the surface: sheen, folds, and bright spots, with the artwork still readable underneath. A glass or refraction effect distorts the image behind it.
Mask the plastic to the shape of the object so it stops at the edges, tighten the folds at the corners, and darken the edge where the film turns out of sight. A slight displacement of the artwork under the folds helps as well.
Packaging visuals, record sleeves and reissue covers, club and rave flyers, streetwear, cosmetics and product shots. It has a solid industrial and sealed look, so plastic wrap fits cold, retail-looking brands better than handmade ones.
Not as they look on screen. The brightest spots are pure white, and paper can't glow, so bring the top end down before you export. The effect is much stronger on gloss lamination than on uncoated stock.
Yes, but keep the bright folds off the words. A highlight across a letter cuts it in half, and small text disappears under the sheen. Mask the film away from headlines and logos.
