Metal Text Effects

Metal text effects render type with the surface properties of specific materials, like brushed steel, hammered iron, anodized aluminum, oxidized copper, cast bronze. Where chrome effects focus on high-polish reflection, these cover the full range of metallic finishes, including aged, worn, and industrial surfaces.

Metal text effects with material logic — not just shiny gradients

The difference between a convincing metal effect and a mediocre one is specificity. Real metal surfaces are shaped by how the material was processed: rrolled steel has a directional grain, cast iron a pitted surface, hammered brass a faceted catch of light. We build our effects around that material logic, which is why the output reads as a particular metal instead of "shiny." And because it's assembled from smart objects and adjustment layers, you can shift steel to brass, add a bevel, or re-letter the whole thing.

The range of metallic finishes

  • Brushed: a fine directional grain and moderate reflectivity; the satin finish of machined parts and consumer electronics.
  • Hammered and forged: irregular, faceted surfaces that scatter the highlight; the mark of metal shaped by hand.
  • Cast and oxidized: pitted, textured, sometimes patina'd surfaces, from raw iron to the green verdigris of weathered copper like the Statue of Liberty.
  • Polished: the smooth, high-contrast, chrome-adjacent end of the spectrum with clean specular reflections.
  • Foil and leaf: thin applied metal with a slightly uneven, hand-laid surface, closer to stamping than to solid metal.

Where metal typography belongs

With metal effects, the surface is the message. Brushed steel, scratched chrome, cast iron, polished gold, and oxidized edges all push the same word in different directions. One finish can make a title feel engineered and precise; another can make it heavy, harsh, loud, or even ceremonial.

That is why metal styles need more than a shiny gradient. Reflection has to follow the form, highlights need a believable edge, and the texture should suggest how the letters were made: cut, cast, engraved, stamped, or worn down over time. When those details line up, metal typography can move from industrial force to polished luxury without losing its physical logic.

Examples of use

  • Rock and metal music packaging: the surface tells you the subgenre before you read a word, brushed steel for industrial, pitted iron for doom, high-polish chrome for glam, and it holds up carved down to a single or a patch.
  • Industrial, construction, and manufacturing identity: forged and riveted lettering reads as strength and machinery, matching the actual material of the work rather than decorating it, and it survives on signage, hi-vis, and equipment alike.
  • Automotive and motorsport design: a machined metal surface mirrors the product itself, so the type feels milled from the same billet as the parts, and the high contrast still reads at speed and at a distance.
  • Gaming and esports visual identity: heavy metallic type carries weight and threat for title screens and team marks, and it scales from a stream overlay to a jersey to a trophy without turning to mush.
  • Luxury and premium product work, in the polished and gold-adjacent range: dialed to a clean, deep-reflection finish, metal shifts from industrial to expensive, signaling a premium object when used sparingly against a dark ground.

When metal is the wrong call

  • A gradient with no texture: without directional grain or surface detail, "metal" is just a grey ramp, the working is what makes it read.
  • Uncorrected CMYK: the deep shadows and bright speculars go muddy in four-color, so premium jobs want a metallic spot color, not a four-color build.
  • Thin type: there isn't enough mass for a brushed or hammered finish to read, so it flattens.
  • Soft, organic, or kids' brands: forged, industrial lettering fights wellness, eco, and children's work, the weight says the wrong thing.
  • One heavy note everywhere: metal on every element reads as unrelenting aggression, it needs contrast around it to land.

Chrome is one point on the metal spectrum: high-polish, high-contrast, cool reflections. These cover the rest of it — brushed, hammered, cast, aged, oxidized — finishes with real texture and lower reflectivity, where the surface tells you how the metal was worked, not just that it's shiny.

Yes. The files carry color adjustment layers, and the gradient and highlight logic holds as you shift, so cool steel moves to warm brass or copper without the surface flattening out.

The deep shadows and bright speculars that sell metal both compress in CMYK — it can go muddy. Build and approve in RGB, then convert and re-check late; for anything premium, spec a metallic Pantone in the actual print rather than trusting the four-color build to carry it.

Yes. A subtle bevel or directional light via layer style reads as more three-dimensional, and because the base effect sits in a smart object, the style stacks on top without disturbing it.

The grain. Brushed and hammered finishes read as metal because of directional texture, not the gradient alone — a fine linear grain for brushed, an irregular faceted one for hammered. If a file looks too clean, the texture layer is probably hidden or at low opacity; bring it up, and keep its direction consistent with the light.
