Blur is usually treated as a way to hide something. Used well, it directs attention instead. Each type of blur references a real optical event: the aperture-shaped bokeh of defocused highlights, the directional streak of a subject moving during exposure, the tilted focal band of a tilt-shift lens, the radial pull of a zoom mid-frame. That grounding is what separates these from a Gaussian pass: the eye reads them as depth, motion, and lens character.

Soft focus, depth, and controlled attention
Blur effects are not only for hiding details. They can shape focus, create depth, soften harsh transitions, separate foreground from background, suggest motion, imitate lens behavior, or make an image more atmospheric. A controlled blur tells the viewer what matters and what should fall away.
In design work, blur is especially useful for campaign visuals, product photography, UI backgrounds, editorial layouts, posters, and social graphics. It will turn busy imagery into a usable backdrop, give type more contrast, add cinematic softness, or introduce speed and uncertainty. The difference between weak blur and strong blur is intention: where it starts, how it falls off, and what it lets remain sharp.
Production contexts where blur effects earn their place
Blur is a way to direct attention, and each type traces a real optical event. Soft focus has been used since the earliest days of photography, but the term for out-of-focus rendering came late.
