Halftone is the trick that lets photographs reach a printing press. It breaks a continuous tone into a grid of dots that grow in the shadows and shrink in the highlights, and the eye reassembles them into a smooth gradation. Enlarge those dots, and the mechanism becomes the message — the coarse, visible dot screen, reminiscent of newsprint, comics, and the pop art Lichtenstein built from them.
