Grain Textures
Digital work is often too clean for its own good. Every edge behaves, every color sits still, every pixel follows orders. No errors. No atmosphere either. Our grain textures put the friction back: fine noise, coarse film grit, dust, printed speckle, and the analog finish that gives your posters, photo edits, packaging, and branding a little more pulse.

Digital artwork can be a little too well-behaved. The edges are clean, the gradients are smooth, the shadows are obedient, and every pixel stands exactly where the software told it to stand. Admirable discipline. Terrible personality. Grain gives the image some friction back. It breaks the perfect digital surface just enough for the design to go printed, photographed, scanned, handled, or aged by something other than a settings panel.
How we make grain
The shortcut is Photoshop's Add Noise. It's a dead giveaway though: every speck is the same size, the same shape, evenly spread, because a computer generated it. Real film grain is nothing like that. It's clumps of silver crystals suspended in the film emulsion, larger and coarser the higher the film speed, scattered in the random, non-repeating way only a physical process produces. So many of the grain files here start with actual film, exposed and developed, then scanned at high resolution so that real crystal structure comes across intact.
There's a subtlety we keep in mind as well, because grain isn't evenly distributed across the tones. It is strongest in the midtones and nearly vanishes in deep shadows and bright highlights, which is how a film stock like Kodak Tri-X behaves and exactly what makes scanned grain feel like part of the image instead of a gray film laid over the top. We hold onto the tonal behavior when we prep the overlays, so they sit in Overlay or Soft Light and give a layout a solid photographic feel.
The grain textures in our collection
Pick grain by two things: how loud it is, and where it came from. Weight sets how much it interrupts a clean surface, from a barely-there whisper to open grit; source sets its character, since scanned film, printed toner, and analog debris each roughen a layout in a different accent. Our range covers both axes:
- Fine grain: subtle, even texture that lifts the digital sheen off a layout without announcing itself, for minimal and clean work.
- Coarse film grain: heavy, clumping structure scanned from fast film stock, the gritty documentary and street-photography look.
- Colored grain: grain made of dye rather than plain black speckle, tinting the texture as it roughens it.
- Dust and scratches: the analog debris of handled film and old prints, specks and hairline marks alongside the grain.
- Printed grain: the mechanical noise of toner and press rather than film, closer to a photocopied surface.
Applying grain without killing it
Blend mode is the whole point. Over a mid-tone photo or gradient, Overlay and Soft Light let the grain sit in the surface. For stronger structure, Hard Light bites harder in shadows and highlights but can get harsh in the mids, so ride the opacity. The trap is tonal: a plain gray grain overlay on Overlay goes almost invisible in deep shadows and bright highlights, leaving those areas suspiciously clean, so you should keep grain slightly stronger than looks right on screen and, on dark work, favor a mode that survives the shadows.
Two production notes that catch people out. Grain is the first thing compression eats, so a texture that looks perfect in the file can vanish in a shrunk-down JPG or a small display size. Simply build it a touch heavier if it has to survive export. And match the grain's own scale to output: fine grain sized for screen turns into visible dirt when the file is scaled up for print.
Where grain textures get used
- Photo grading and retouching: film grain that pulls the clinical sheen off a digital shot.
- Gradient and flat-color layouts: grain over smooth blends to kill banding and add surface.
- Album covers and music visuals: analog grit that signals warmth and genre.
- Minimalist branding: subtle grain that keeps a clean system from reading sterile.
- Poster and editorial design: a printed, tactile finish over the whole composition.
- Packaging concepts: fine noise that suggests real print stock.
- Film, video, and title cards: a frame-wide grain for a shot-on-film look.
- Social and web backgrounds: texture that stops flat color floating.
- Illustration finishing: grain over vector work to warm up hard edges.
- Retro and vintage projects: dust, scratches, and speckle for an aged surface.
Grain breaks up the unnatural smoothness of screen work. It gives gradients depth, softens flat color, adds a tactile surface, and pulls a composition closer to how print and photographed images actually look, which is warmer and less clinical than a clean vector fill.
Paper textures carry structure: fibers, folds, stains, physical surface. Grain textures work at a finer level, speckle, noise, dust, and gradient roughness spread evenly across the frame. Paper gives you a material; grain gives you a finish.
Yes. Grain makes a gradient look richer and less synthetic by disrupting the smooth color transition, which is exactly why it helps neon gradients, holographic backgrounds, and soft atmospheric layouts that would otherwise band or look plasticky.
Subtle grain. It adds surface and depth while keeping type, product shots, and the layout system clean and readable, so the design still reads as minimal, just no longer sterile.
Grain is fine and even: noise, film grain, paper surface, printed roughness. Grunge is broader and aggressive: scratches, stains, cracks, dirt, torn marks, heavy distress. Grain refines a surface; grunge damages it.
Not always, so plan for it. Heavy compression and small display sizes swallow fine grain, and print can either lose it or exaggerate it depending on screening. Keep the grain slightly stronger than looks right on screen, and proof at final size and format.
