Matahari Sans Font Family

Matahari means sun in Indonesian, and Studio Sun drew it in Bali as a working system for information design. This humanist sans serif font family is semi-monolinear, with vertical stress, diagonal-cut edges, and micro ink traps at the joints.

The double-storey a and g come from the oldstyle and transitional tradition — the same choice Eric Gill made in 1928 for Gill Sans, which he built on Edward Johnston's 1916 alphabet for the London Underground, the design that started the humanist sans as a genre. The M sits on a square, while S, C, G, c, and e are drawn with uneven curves, which keeps long text from going mechanical.

Usage: brand identity systems, signage and wayfinding, editorial layouts, web, UI, packaging, and labels.
