Grunge Graphics
Our selection covers tears, scuffs, spray, tape lifts, ink starvation, and halftone broken up past repair, mostly as transparent overlays. The files arrive considerably cleaner than the things they imitate.
Grunge graphics: roughness as a visual language
Grunge graphics owe as much to cheap reproduction as they do to music. In 1976, Mark Perry started the London punk zine Sniffin’ Glue with the tools close at hand: typewriter text, handwriting, cut-and-paste layouts, then photocopying to pull the whole thing together. Jamie Reid pushed the same DIY grammar into the Sex Pistols’ visual world, where torn newsprint and mismatched lettering made polish feel almost suspicious. The roughness came partly from attitude and partly from production. Xerox machines were not famous for subtle tonal range, which turned out to be useful.
By the early 1990s, the damage had become deliberate. David Carson’s art direction for Ray Gun broke grids, layered type into image, pushed legibility until it became texture, and gave alternative music a graphic language as restless as the culture around it. He was not working alone. Experimental magazines such as Emigre and design programs like Cranbrook had already been dismantling modernist rules, but Ray Gun put the instability in front of a much wider audience.
Today grunge graphics stretch far beyond distressed paper. A photocopy, a strip of tape, bitmap noise, a scratched photograph, a hurried marker line were not invented to become graphic design. Yet they have enough character to keep finding new life in practical creative work.
Grunge material sorted by the damage
- Photocopy. Contrast collapses, mid-tones drop out entirely, thin lines thicken, and the platen adds dirt of its own.
- Halftone and dither. Continuous tone forced into a fixed grid of dots. The pattern is drawn geometry, so it has one correct viewing size and turns into either visible discs or flat grey outside it.
- Physical wear. Damage follows the shape of what happened to it: creases, tears, water staining, foxing and sun bleaching on the original object.
- Ink failure. Overinking, blotting, misregistration, a stamp pressed unevenly. The mark is heavier than intended in some places and missing in others, and the plate or the pad is usually visible at the edges.
- Applied marks. Spray, marker, scratching, and tape added deliberately after the fact.
Applying damage so it looks like damage
Real wear has a cause and a place. Corners scuff, folds crack, edges fray, and the middle of a sheet stays cleanest of all because nothing touches it. So instead of doing it at random, put your grit where the object would genuinely have taken a beating.
Keep the structure underneath rigid. Grunge works against order, which means it needs order to work against, so a firm grid and clean type are likely to argue. Rough everything is just mud. Along the same lines, leave one element untouched: a single crisp line or clean shape in a distressed layout proves the damage was deliberate, and if you don’t, the whole thing might read as a file that went wrong in production.
And whatever you do, don’t scatter texture evenly at low opacity across the entire artwork. That is the tell of every stock grunge layout ever made. Instead, heavy in a few places, absent in others, nothing in between.
What grunge graphics get used for
- Gig posters and club flyers.

- Craft beer and small-batch spirits labels.
- Game interfaces for horror and post-apocalyptic settings.
- Sticker sheets and enamel pin artwork.
First, there is processed artwork: 1-bit dithering, photocopy degradation, bitmap vectors, brutalist elements, scribbles. It comes as vector or raster depending on the pack. Also, there are photographed objects cut out on transparency: tape, chains, barbed wire, statues, worn stickers.
It has a native size where the dot structure reads correctly. The dots become visible discs when enlarged and close into flat grey when reduced. Vector dithering has the same limits, since the dots are drawn geometry. Work near the intended size and re-process the artwork for any large change.
The dot grid interferes with the pixel grid of the display, or with the resampling that happens on export. Export at the exact size the element will be displayed at. Where the size can change, use a coarser dot that survives resampling. Halftone material has the same problem.
Light direction, which is fixed from the shoot. Elements lit from opposite sides won’t sit on the same surface. Tape needs extra work: it’s semi-transparent, so it carries traces of whatever it was photographed against, and it needs a blend mode or a cleaned alpha to sit properly on a layout.
Use one texture family per composition and leave clean areas in the layout. Grit next to a flat panel or a plain margin reads more clearly than grit across a whole page. Dither stacked over photocopy over paper grain is illegible at any size.
Condensed gothics, typewriter fonts, and heavy sans. Set them either very large or very small. Distressed display styles need care, since distressed type over distressed graphics gives two competing textures. Where the artwork is already loud, a clean face is the safer choice.
Yes, on uncoated stock. High-contrast 1-bit artwork holds up there, and the look tolerates cheap paper. Large solid blacks need specifying — ask about rich black or a double hit, because a single black over a wide area goes patchy on uncoated.
