Abstract Graphics & Shapes
A short list of forms doing an enormous amount of work: circles, arcs, waves, triangles and the soft irregular shapes nobody has named. Our collection adds the gradients, grain and halftone that give them a surface. None of it depicts anything, which makes it the most agreeable material in the library.
Abstract graphics & clipart: shapes do the talking
In 1910, Wassily Kandinsky looked at one of his own paintings turned sideways and briefly failed to recognize it. Without the familiar subject to anchor the image, color, rhythm, and geometry suddenly carried the whole composition themselves. He later described the moment as a revelation, and within a few years abstract art had begun treating shapes not as simplified objects, but as visual ideas in their own right. The circle no longer had to be the sun. It could simply be a circle.
Modern design embraced that freedom remarkably quickly. The Bauhaus reduced visual language to geometry and the Swiss Style turned grids and simple forms into a discipline. Later on, corporate identity discovered that abstract symbols traveled across languages far more easily than illustrations ever could. A triangle does not belong to any culture in particular. That’s surprisingly useful when the logo has to.
Digital tools changed the workflow, but not the principle. Abstract graphics became reusable visual building blocks, moving freely between branding, editorial design, posters, interfaces, motion graphics, and social media. The shapes are deliberately open-ended, leaving you to decide whether they become a brutalist composition, a Matisse-inspired collage, a futuristic interface, or something no movement has claimed yet.
Abstract shapes and where their forms come from
- Geometric. Circle, square, triangle, arc, ruled line. Everything is constructible with a compass and a straight edge. The family carries a century of Bauhaus and Swiss work behind it.
- Biomorphic. Curved forms with no straight edge and no name. Arp and Miró set the vocabulary in the twenties and thirties, and it has barely moved since.
- Gestural. A record of a physical movement: brush, ink, roller, marker. The shape is a byproduct of the speed and pressure that made it, so no two are repeatable.
- Pattern and optical. Repetition does the job, whether that is vibration, depth, or drift. Reading depends on the interval as much as on the shape.
- Diagrammatic. Grids, orbits, plots, connecting lines and measurement marks, borrowed from technical drawing. Read as information even when they encode nothing.
Making abstract graphics earn their place
When starting, you should give every shape a job. Abstract forms have no subject to justify them, so the only thing keeping one on the page is what it does to the reading order: pointing at something, separating two things, weighting a corner that felt light. If a shape does none of that, serving just as decoration hiding inside a layout, it is usually the first thing a client asks you about.
You might also let the shapes leave the page — and it’s a good solution. Forms tucked inside the margins look pretty much like clipart, while the same form cut by the trim is more a decision, and the crop promises there is more of it out there. Break the symmetry early too, because centered and mirrored arrangements come across as an attempt at a logo, whatever you meant by them. Push the group off axis and let the sizes differ properly — more than by ten percent or so.
What abstract graphics are good at
- Building visual identities from shapes that can travel across print, screen, and motion.
- Giving editorial layouts structure without introducing another literal image.
- Creating campaign systems where the same visual language has to survive many formats.
- Adding movement and hierarchy to social graphics, presentations, and digital launches.
- Turning simple compositions into stronger art direction through scale, rhythm, and placement.
Three, with different jobs. Editable vector shape sets (organic blobs, brutalist and geometric forms, wavy and cyber elements) are for building layouts and brand systems. Painted mark-making (brush strokes, marker elements, ink rollers, scribbles) is high-resolution raster with soft alpha. Rendered 3D objects are fixed-angle PNGs.
They reduce cleanly and enlarge poorly, since the whole value of the element is the bristle detail and the ragged edge. Enlarging blurs that. Check pixel dimensions before placing one at poster scale, and where a set gives you a choice, pick the physically largest stroke and crop into it instead of stretching a small one.
Work through the alpha, not with a hue adjustment on a black element. Lock transparency and fill, or use the element as a layer mask over a solid — the grey values in the alpha carry the bristle and dry-brush detail, and filling through them keeps it. A colorize adjustment on a near-black stroke flattens it to a silhouette.
By sharing a construction rule. Pick one geometry — e.g., corner radius, stroke weight, curve tension, how forms terminate — and hold it across every element.
Value separation. Bring the shapes to within a narrow value range of the background so the type has clear contrast against everything underneath it, or confine the shapes to a defined zone the type never crosses. Shapes at full saturation across a whole spread compete with every word on it.
With attention. Long, subtle gradients band on press and in some RIPs, and vector gradient meshes can be heavy enough to fail at output. Add a small amount of noise to break the banding, keep gradients away from the very light end where steps show most, and rasterize a mesh at final resolution if the printer reports problems.
