Broken Glass Effects Photoshop

Broken glass effects overlay an image with fracture patterns that radiate from an impact point, with concentric rings and bright highlights along every exposed edge. Our collection covers impact fractures, cracked overlays, displaced shards, scattered fragment compositions, and monochrome treatments.

Broken glass effects: fracture patterns over an image

A broken glass effect overlays an image with cracks, shards and fracture lines so the picture appears to sit behind or on shattered glass. The convincing part is the pattern, because glass does not break randomly. Fractures radiate outward from the point of impact, with concentric rings crossing those radial lines, and the spacing between rings tightens closer to the impact.

Glass type changes the pattern completely. Annealed glass, used in picture frames and older windows, breaks into long sharp shards following those radial lines. Tempered glass, used in car side windows and phone screens, is manufactured under surface compression and shatters into thousands of small blunt cubes across the entire pane at once. A cracked-screen effect and a smashed-window effect therefore look nothing alike.

Light finishes the illusion. Broken glass exposes fresh edges that catch light, so each fracture carries a thin bright highlight along its length. Without that, the cracks read as drawn lines over a photograph.

Types in this collection

  • Impact fractures: radial cracks with concentric rings from a single point.
  • Cracked glass overlays: fracture lines across an intact sheet, image fully visible.
  • Shard separation: fragments displaced from their original positions.
  • Fragment compositions: pieces scattered across the frame with gaps between them.
  • Monochrome fractures: glass damage combined with black-and-white conversion.
  • Poster treatments: fracture patterns scaled for large-format output.

Placing the damage

The crack pattern sits on its own layer and can be repositioned, rotated or scaled. The impact point should sit away from faces and critical detail, since fragmentation is heaviest there and detail becomes unreadable under dense cracking.

Offsetting fragments slightly increases the physical reading. Glass that has broken but stayed in the frame shifts marginally out of plane, so small displacements and subtle changes in brightness between pieces suggest depth.

Broken and shattered describe different outcomes. Broken glass keeps the sheet together with cracks running through it and the image intact. Shattered glass separates into fragments that move apart, sometimes with pieces missing entirely, which breaks the image into disconnected sections.

Where broken glass effects are used

  • Film and game posters: action, thriller and horror promotion.
  • Sports campaigns: imagery built around impact and force.
  • Music artwork: covers for heavier genres.
  • Editorial openers: features on conflict, crisis or breakdown.
  • Advertising: campaigns using damage as a narrative device.

A broken glass effect overlays an image with cracks, shards, and fracture lines so the picture appears to be behind or printed on shattered glass. Fragments catch light along their edges and the surface splits into irregular angular pieces.

Tempered glass shatters into small blunt cubes, while regular annealed glass breaks into long sharp shards radiating from the impact point. The fracture pattern depends on the glass type, which is why an impact effect and a cracked-screen effect look different.

Keep the cracks radiating from one impact point, with concentric rings around it. Add a thin bright highlight along each fracture edge, since broken glass catches light at its exposed edges, and offset some fragments slightly so they appear to have moved.

Broken glass keeps the sheet intact with cracks running across it, so the image stays readable. Shattered glass separates into fragments that move apart, often with pieces missing, which breaks the image into disconnected sections.

Yes. The crack pattern sits on its own layer and can be repositioned, rotated, or scaled over the image. Place the impact point away from faces and key detail, since the heaviest fragmentation surrounds that spot.

Broken glass appears in film and game posters, music artwork, sports campaigns, thriller and horror promotion, and editorial design signaling conflict, disruption, or a breaking point.
