3D graphics and a teapot from 1975
Nobody can tell you what these objects are, including the people who made them. A lump. A knot. A blob with a hole through it. Forms with no name, no function, and no relatives outside a screen. The material, meanwhile, is immaculate: glass with the dispersion tuned, chrome carrying a whole reflected room, matte with one soft highlight riding the edge. Every hour went into what the thing is made of, though none went into what the thing is.
That imbalance is inherited, and it starts with a teapot. In 1975 Martin Newell was in the graphics program at the University of Utah, needing something to test his rendering ideas on. The usual candidates were useless: a pawn, a donut, an urn, all too simple to prove anything. Over tea one weekend, his wife Sandra suggested he model the service sitting in front of them. He sketched it on graph paper by eye, then rebuilt it in Bézier patches. The cup didn’t qualify, the saucer didn’t, the spoon didn’t. The teapot had everything: curves running in more than one direction, a handle with a hole through it, a spout that let the body throw a shadow onto itself, plus enough presence to be an object with no texture on it whatsoever.
For twenty years afterward that shape turned up in every paper and every demo, wireframe, faceted, smooth-shaded, reflective, refractive, leopard-skin, furry. Newell later said he expected to be remembered for his algorithms and got remembered for that damned teapot. The habit outlived him, and it’s sitting in every pack of our abstract 3D objects on the market: the form is a pretext, the material is the content.

Composing with rendered objects
Everything in a 3D pack cannot be relit. That single fact decides most of what follows. Find the key light in each object by looking at where the highlight sits and which way the shadow falls, and only combine objects that agree.
Shadows deserve a separate look. A shadow baked into the PNG carries the tone of whatever surface it was rendered against, which is invisible on white and shows up as grey haze the moment you move to a dark or saturated background. Check it before you build the layout around a color.
And be honest about what these objects are for. They have no subject, so they cannot mean anything on their own, which makes them excellent at carrying material and useless at carrying an idea. You can solve it by letting the type and the layout say the thing, while the chrome is just chrome.
Rendered images in most cases: transparent PNGs from a single camera angle, with lighting baked in. Some sets also include source scenes or layered PSDs, and the file list states this. A PNG can’t be rotated or relit, so confirm the contents if your layout needs a second angle.
Up to the pixel dimensions of the render. Around 3000px covers web, social, and posters seen at normal distance; large-format print needs more. Specular highlights and object edges degrade first under upscaling, so check dimensions in the product details/description.
Only when the lighting matches. Read the key light from where the highlight sits and which way the shadow falls: objects lit from opposite sides won’t combine into one scene regardless of color grading. Within a single pack, this is consistent by default. Across packs, choose objects with the highlight in the same position and use a horizontal flip where the geometry is symmetrical enough.
It varies by pack, and it determines which backgrounds you can use. A shadow baked into the PNG carries the tone of the surface it was rendered on and shows up as grey haze on dark or saturated backgrounds. Sets with the shadow on its own layer give you full control. With a pre-built shadow, either keep the background light or mask it out and rebuild it.
Matte and cel-shaded objects, yes: the shading is a value ramp, so a gradient map or hue shift holds. Chrome and glass, no: those surfaces reflect the studio environment they were rendered in, so a color adjustment looks like a filter laid over existing reflections. For brand-specific colors, start from a matte set instead of adapting a chrome one.
The semi-transparent pixels still hold the light background the object was composited over. Layer › Matting › Remove White Matte in Photoshop clears most of it, and a duplicate layer set to Screen covers what remains. Test this on the darkest background you plan to use before committing to a set.
Partially. Neon and iridescent color-shift fall outside the CMYK gamut and proof back as pastel. Chrome is mostly value rather than hue and converts more reliably. For print, select objects that hold up as form and light, not just a color.
