Botanical illustrations for apothecary labels, book covers, and wedding suites

Bud, open flower, ripe fruit, a seed cut in half, a section through the root. All on one sheet, all in focus, all apparently at the same moment. The specimen also floats on white with no soil beneath it, no horizon behind it, which neither happens outdoors.

Behind each of these sheets stood a botanist with requirements. The plate was an instrument: a species existed for European science largely in the form of a drawing, and once Linnaeus put the naming system in order in 1753, that drawing had to carry every feature needed to separate one species from its neighbors. Plants travel badly, and pressed specimens lose their color and their shape, while a plate could go anywhere, remaining legible two centuries later.

Then photography arrived, and the plates were free to be beautiful. They went onto seed packets, apothecary labels, tea tins and endpapers, and they went easily, because two centuries of scientific requirement had left them isolated on white, evenly detailed from root to petal and already separated from any background.

Handling engraved and painted plant artwork

When a package names a plant, verify the picture against a modern botanical reference. Historical plates were drawn from dried specimens, written descriptions, and sometimes a colleague’s sketch, and stylized or straightforwardly misidentified plants are common in them. For a herbal, cosmetic, food, or supplement client, that is a claim on a label. Where the plant is decorative, and the client knows it, the same liberties are perfectly good design, and quite a few of them were taken deliberately in the first place.

Settle the paper early. Every scan carries the tone of the sheet it came off, usually a warm cream, so you should normalize the whites across everything you plan to use, then put one warm grade over the finished composition.

Noticed that engraved and painted botanicals rarely sit well together? True, one describes form with line, the other with tone. If a layout needs both, let one be the subject and put the other in as supporting material at a much smaller scale. Dropping the engraving to a single flat color also works, since it stops competing on detail and starts behaving like ornament.

Do not place type over dense hatching — plan the gaps instead. Old plates leave generous margins around the specimen precisely because the engraver knew text was coming, and your words belong there. Where copy genuinely has to sit over the artwork, take the botanical right down in contrast until it is a ghost of itself and let the type hold all the value in the layout.

Three of them. Modern vector element sets scale and recolor freely. Digitized antique engravings and lithographs are raster, with fixed resolution and often a paper background. Photographed specimens — pressed flowers, dried leaves — are cut-out PNGs with real light and shadow.

Use a mask, not a blend mode alone. Multiply knocks out the white but darkens whatever is underneath, which is fine on cream and wrong on saturated color. Build a mask from the scan’s luminosity, invert it, and fill flat color through it — that gives clean lines on any ground. Some packs include a pre-masked PNG, which saves the step.

Yes, within a limit set by their tonal structure. Engravings describe volume through hatching density, so a duotone or gradient map holds as long as you keep enough value range between the lines and the paper. Compress that range and the hatching flattens into an even grey with no form left in it.

Until the hatching merges. Adjacent lines close up as you reduce, and a plate that’s beautiful at 120mm becomes a grey mass at 20mm. Test at final size on the actual substrate, and for the smallest applications consider a simplified redraw with the detail deliberately thinned.

Keep line weight and detail level constant, which usually means working within one pack. Vary scale across the elements so nothing is at identical size, overlap where stems meet, and aim the stems toward a common origin.
